How Volcanoes Erupt

A volcano is a mountain with a hole at the top. Deep inside the earth, it is very hot. The heat melts rock into a thick, red liquid. We call this liquid magma.

Magma is very heavy. It pushes up through cracks in the earth. When it reaches the top, it bursts out! Now we call it lava.

Lava is so hot it can burn through almost anything. It moves slowly down the side of the mountain. As it cools, it turns hard like rock.

Some volcanoes erupt all the time. Others sleep for hundreds of years. When a big volcano erupts, it shoots ash high into the sky. The ash can block the sun and the sky turns dark!

Volcanoes can be dangerous. But they help our planet too. Old lava breaks down into rich soil. Farmers love to grow crops in volcano soil!
